On October 26th, CAPT J. Steven Correia gave the seminar on managing polarity between network usability and security. CAPT Correia is the Commanding Officer from Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Far East (NCTSFE) in Yokosuka, Japan – the primary organization responsible for US Navy networking and cyber security in the Far East.
CAPT Correia discussed usability vs. security as a problem of polarity and shared some insight on how he manages this issue. Operation and security are both important for the military, but sometimes these are in direct conflict due to lack of resources or time to satisfy both. He stressed that there is no silver bullet in this dilemma, and network administrators had to find good balance by communicating with all parties involved; mission directors, network operators, and security professionals.
