January 2016 Monthly Event

Come join the AFCEA Tokyo family for our first monthly event of 2016, on Friday January 29th. We are proud to be hosting a presentation on the US and Japan Cybersecurity Alliance from the Defense Industry Perspective by Yutaka Takahashi from NEC Corporation and Yusuke Haga from Mitsubishi Corporation. As always, this monthly event is being held at our usual location - The New Sanno - and will feature our standard spread of free hors d'oeuvres, finger food, and beverages of your choice. This event, like all our monthly events, are FREE for everyone to attend. The New Sanno is a U.S. military complex, and requires an official government issued identification card with picture (ie. DoD CAC, DoD Dependent ID, DoD Retired ID, Passport, Alien Registration Card, etc. ) for entry.

Come join the AFCEA Tokyo family for our March 2016 monthly event on Friday March 25th for a very timely event. Mr. Lance Gatling will be presenting on a topic near and dear to the heart of Japan considering this year marks the fifth anniversary of the Great Tohoku Earthquake and Disaster. Mr. Gatling will be discussing Fukushima's Nuclear Meltdown - 5 years after 3/11 - What Really Happened?. Here is an overview: "Fukushima's nuclear plant disaster on 3/11 set the world on edge. Hundreds of thousands evacuated, governments panicked, and people actually wondered if Tokyo had to be evacuated. This discussion will look at the technology of the plants, what happened, how much danger there was, if any remains, and what the clean up entails. The discussion will examine the technology, the incident, and the past danger in plain, understandable language." We are pleased to announce Mr. Erick Kish, Commercial Attaché, from the US Embassy Japan. Erick will be presenting the topic The Digital Economy in Japan: How the Department of Commerce is Helping Industry Move into Cyber. This is an issue many companies are facing and Erick will surely have an educational perspective on the topic, along with discussing the various activities the Department of Commerce is involved in throughout Japan. July 2016 Monthly Event

The AFCEA Tokyo (東京) family is back at it again with out first monthly event since our successful AFCEA Tokyo (東京) TechNet 2016 event in early June. We are pleased to welcome back Jim Pelczar for a really interesting and timely topic: the Japan ATM heist. If you, like what appears to be three-quarters of Japan, are playing the popular PokemonGo mobile game, this is a unique opportunity to enter a U.S. facility and potentially acquire pokemon you may not otherwise be able to catch due to the secure nature of The New Sanno. Using publically available information, kill chain, and an analysis of the necessary inputs and processes to enable the outputs of the 2016 Japan ATM heist, Jim Pelczar will present possible explanations. Although the full story will probably not be disclosed for quite some time, a great deal of useful information will be examined. Jim will present in English and Japanese. The AFCEA Tokyo (東京) family is here to help you escape the crazy summer heat wave with our August 2016 Monthly Event within the cool confines of The New Sanno Hotel. We are pleased to be hosting Yusuke Gunji, Founder & CEO of Machina Record, to give a presentation on a topic we have not yet explored. Gunji-san will be discussing The Deep & Dark Web: An Overview & Discussion of its Role in Cyber Threat Intelligence. Threat actors are increasingly using the Deep & Dark web to communicate and coordinate unlawful activities taking place both online and offline. Accordingly, public and private sectors are utilizing this part of the internet to bolster data collection and intelligence capabilities. Gunji-san will provide a basic overview and structure of the Deep & Dark web, including its role in empowering teams to take more proactive security measures. Having trouble staying cool in this unbearable Tokyo summer humidity? Join the AFCEA Tokyo (東京) family on Friday September 30 at The New Sanno Hotel and cool off with some free hors d'oeuvres and beverages of your choice. This month we are pleased to be hosting a fireside chat with Ms. Miho Matsubara, CSO Japan, Palo Alto Networks Japan. Matsubara-san and Scott will sit down together and discuss a wide array of topics, ranging from recent cyber security developments in Japan, Rio 2016 and moving towards Tokyo 2020, and other areas of interest. The goal for the event this month is to have an interactive discussion between Matsubara-san, Scott, and the audience. While Miho and Scott will certainly be challenging each other on various cyber security talking points, we strongly encourage the audience to get involved and ask tough questions or comment on your own observations. In addition, due to The New Sanno security requirements, passports issued by certain countries require additional documentation and a 30-day lead-time for access.
