Selecting a theme is always an fascinating thought exercise. On the one hand we endeavor to choose a topic we feel is best representative of the current technological environment. On the other hand, we also attempt to present a much more thorough story, by weaving together previous TechNet themes into a single, cohesive multi-year narrative. We then sprinkle on local Tokyo and Japan-specific subjects, and finally agree on a theme we feel best meets all those requirements.
This year we are pleased to present “transformation” as the newest chapter in the AFCEA 東京 TOKYO saga. Consider where the world of technology, and cyber security in particular, was just a few short years ago and compare that image to today. We have undergone quite the transformation, and continue to transform. Society has seemingly embraced the idea of the Internet-of-Things (IoT), which will undoubtedly transform the globe in ways we cannot even currently imagine. Cyber security is transforming into a more machine-learning, artificial intelligence driven approach to detection and defense.
Technological transformation is not the only reason for this decision. In 2015 we discussed convergence, followed by resilience in 2016, primarily to honor Japan on the fifth anniversary of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami disaster. In 2017 we focused on cooperation in multiple ways, coming at topics from the multi-stakeholder perspective. We discussed the need for disparate forces, such as Japanese and American governments, industries, and academics, to collaborate to ensure effective capabilities.
In 2018 we will explore transformation as we are front row witnesses to global and Japanese specific changes. With less than three years before the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the country is in a major transformational state. There is a lot of work needed to transform the country for the major influx of foreign tourists, and the potential threats to the Japanese way of life – especially from the technological and security perspectives. The regional geopolitical transformations are a major concern for Tokyo 2020, with North Korea leaving a lot of questions unanswered and Russian attempts to destabilize the global political landscape.
Finally, the aftermath of Tokyo 2020 upon its completion will likely have transformational consequences for the country. How will Japan, and Tokyo in particular, deal with the changes after the games have finished, and how does the country sustain the positives without falling victim to the negatives?
The bottom line: transformation of society into a more connected IoT-based world, transformation of cyber security into new and inventive areas, and transformation of Japan and Tokyo both before and after the Tokyo 2020 games.
Transformation as a theme will allow us to explore a lot of topics from a thought-provoking context. These perspectives will be extremely educational for Japan, Tokyoites, and attendees from all over the globe, whether associated with the US or Japanese governments, military, industry, or academia. We hope everyone will enjoy what we have put together, and look forward to seeing all in March 2018!

Dave has over two decades of industry experience. He has extensive experience in IT security operations and management. Currently, Dave is a Global Security Advocate for Akamai Technologies.
He is the founder of the security site Liquidmatrix Security Digest and co-host of the Liquidmatrix podcast. Dave writes a column for Forbes and CSO Online.
Tanya Janca is a developer advocate specializing in application security; evangelizing about software security through public speaking, her open source project DevSlop, and various forms of teaching via workshops, blogs and community events.
As an ethical hacker, OWASP Project and Chapter Leader, software developer, effective altruist and professional computer geek of 20+ years, she is a person who is truly fascinated by the ‘science’ of computer science.
Thomas is Head of APAC Business Development at Gatecoin, a cryptocurrency and blockchain token exchange headquartered in Hong Kong. He began his career in the cryptocurrency industry at Tokyo-based Mt.Gox, once the world’s largest bitcoin exchange, where he drove the firm’s international expansion, new product development, and marketing initiatives.
He has also worked as a consultant for various fintech firms and startups based in Asia Pacific. Thomas has conducted dozens of workshops and seminars on the cryptocurrency ecosystem for financial institutions and universities in Asia. He is also a regular commentator on crypto-token market trends for Bloomberg, CNBC, Nikkei and the Hong Kong Economic Journal.
Mr. Cameron Chehreh
Having over 20 years of experience, Cameron has helped transform businesses across industries serving in a variety of leadership roles. He has been an innovator solving complex business problems across the span of his career. Whether it is creating repeatable solutions for one of the world’s first Cloud Computing companies or helping to lead a corporate turnaround scenario, Cameron has been engaged in all facets of business from market strategy, sales, business development, operations, P&L and technology management.

Col(ret) Samuel Bass
Col(ret) Samuel Bass is a senior executive with 25 years of management and leadership experience specializing in information systems and cyberspace security. He’s led large and small teams in critical national security and advisory positions in numerous locations in the United States, Germany, Iraq and Japan.
Yan is co-founder and CTO of Code Chrysalis, an advanced coding school in Tokyo. She started learning how to code when she became disillusioned with her career in trading. Since leaving trading, she has worked as a software developer at a Silicon Valley machine learning startup, taught coding for a number of organizations, and started a coding bootcamp in Jordan for refugees. She holds bachelor’s degrees in Economics and Arabic from Dartmouth College.
Scott Warren is a partner in the Tokyo office of Squire Patton Boggs specializing in data privacy and cybersecurity issues. He has been working on digital data and data breach issues in Asia for nearly 25 years, with over half of those as in-house counsel for Sega and Microsoft. He serves on the Executive Board of The Society for the Policing of Cyberspace, a non-profit organization working to bring together governments, corporations and the public to better handle cyber-risks. He is a Certified International Counter-Cyber Crime Professional.
Saimon Michelson is responsible for the design and architecture of the CTERA’s military-grade file services platform. He has architected secure cloud transformation solutions for government and defense agencies around the world, including the U.S. DOD/DISA.
Saimon has held positions across several functions within CTERA, including product management, sales engineering, software development, and quality assurance. Saimon holds a BSc in Computer Science from Tel Aviv University.
Jason Blalock is a Consulting Engineer for Cisco Systems, focusing on Collaboration solutions for Department of Defense customers in the Pacific.
Chris Usserman is a principal threat intelligence subject matter expert with Infoblox bringing 27 years of combined intelligence and cyber operations experience. He currently assists Infoblox sales teams with promoting the value of Infoblox DNS Security and related Threat Intelligence products in client cyber security programs.
Chris’s focus is on US government, followed by commercial ventures. Prior to Infoblox, Chris worked at iSIGHT Partners for over 3 years as a Sr. Director, Applied Intelligence, and Director, Client Engagement and Government Programs. Chris was also a Lead Research Scientist at Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Laboratories, a System Engineer at SAIC, and 20+ years in the US intelligence community.

David is a Senior Sales, Strategy and Technology Executive advancing digital transformation, data
management and IT modernization strategies throughout the U.S. Department of Defense. Prior to Dell
Technologies, David held technology and executive leadership positions with Oracle, Blue Coat, Tableau
Software, EMC, and Cisco. David advises government, academia, boards and industry on AI, big data, cloud computing,
cybersecurity, data analytics, data center modernization, data science, DevOps optimization, machine
learning and IoT strategies.
Peter Steyaert is a leading cyber security and IT architect who directs all detailed and extensive ASOC
product discussions for Federal programs and is brought in as an advisor to private sector customers on
as needed basis. His background and knowledge spans the fields of cyber defense, SOC management,
VoIP, and network architecture. Peter has worked on significantly large projects in both the Federal
Government space and private sector. He received his Master of Science degree in Cyber and
Information Security from Capitol Technology University, an accredited institution recognized by both
NSA and DHS as an Academic Center of Excellence.
Energetic, highly motivated Sales Director/Executive with more than 16 years of experience catering to Department of Defense (DoD), Federal and Commercial Markets. Authoritative public speaker developing and presenting compelling technical sales presentations and product demonstrations. Understanding customer requirements and creating business case justifications for large-scale enterprise projects for DoD arena and Major Commands.
Over fifteen years of account management experience providing complete solutions in support of DoD and Civilian customer needs. A strong focus on engineering, selling, integrating, and managing converged / unified networks (voice, video, and data) primarily focused on government communication solutions; such as, cloud and mobility applications, security, continuity of operations and transport. Knowledgeable in a full spectrum of network related activities spanning from initial analysis through end user training is augmented with extensive hands-on sales and engineering background.
Dany has over 20 years of business experience in executive, senior management and sales leadership roles in mobile, cloud computing, travel & hospitality, and e-commerce across Asia, Europe and North America. Prior to Magnet Forensics, Dany was VP – APAC for Revinate, a SAAS company based in San Francisco serving the hospitality industry, and SVP – APAC for Silent Circle, an encrypted communications firm based in Geneva. He was previously Chief Operating Officer at HalalTrip.com, GM of AirAsia iVentures and VP – Southeast Asia at BlackBerry. Dany is a guest lecturer on Leadership, Influence and Management Communications at National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

Ms. Tam Nguyen is a Secretary of Defense Executive Fellow assigned to Dell Technologies, a global leader in IT solutions, products and services with innovative, world-class business practices. Prior to her assignment at Dell, Ms. Nguyen served as the Principal Assistant Program Manager for the Surface Mine Countermeasure (SMCM) Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (UUV) Program in the Program Executive Office for Littoral Combat Ships, Unmanned Maritime Systems (PMS 406). She led the development of the Navy’s advanced autonomous undersea mine hunting system (Knifefish) and managed the Acquisition Category III program with a budget of $380M across the Future Years Defense Program. She previously served as the Principal Assistant Program Manager for the Large Displacement UUV (LDUUV) Program. In these and other prior assignments, she has accumulated more than 25-year experience in the development and acquisition of undersea sensors and platforms. Ms. Nguyen holds a Master of Science in Technical Management from Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland College Park. She is a graduate of the Defense Systems Management College, Program Managers Course. She holds Level III certification in Program Management and is a recipient of the Navy Meritorious Civilian Medal Award and numerous other awards for excellence in program management.
Ms. Lewis leads systems engineering for the DOD community at Dell EMC Federal. Her teams of engineers are trusted partners to Federal agencies designing data center consolidation, cloud, data analytics and tactical deployable solutions. She has over 26 years of experience in technology design, integration and training; and 16 years in the Federal DoD and civilian space. She has a passion for supporting those who serve our country and helping customers gain insight from their data in support of their missions. Ms. Lewis holds a BA from University of Missouri and is a certified EMC Professional. She is a member of AFCEA, mentors women in technology fields and volunteers in early education initiatives.
